Nyx is known as the goddess of the night as well as the darkness of night. She is one of the Protogenoi, also known as the first born elemental gods. She is said to be born of Chaos. She is the sister and consort of Erebus, and with him had two children, Light (Aither) and Day (Hemera). Alone, she had many other children. (This is not the full list, just th eones which I can find at the time. Will update the list as I continue my research)

List of Nyx’s Children

With Erebus:

  • Aether (Upper Air)
  • Hemera (Day)

By Herself:

  • Moros (Doom)
  • Thanatos (Death)

  • Charon (Ferryman of Hades)

  • Eris (Strife)
  • Erinyes (The Furies)
  • Nemesis (Retribution)

She is not just the goddess of night but also of darkness and other night time activities. She is said to be the subduer of gods and men. She is often seen around with horses, riding in a chariot or winged, with wings on her back. She resides in the realm of Hades, specifically Tartarus. It has been said that she resides there with her brother, within the darkness. She is considered one of the most powerful goddesses within Greek mythology. This is due to the myth of Hypnos, Hera and Zeus. Hera had asked Hypnos to place Zeus into a deep sleep, which he did at a cost. When Zeus was awakened, he was angry at what Hypnos had done to him, searching for him high and low. Hypnos, scared, ran back to his mother, Nyx, who protected him. When Zeus happened upon them, even though he was angry about what had happened, he backed off, not wanting to fight Nyx. When she rides to bring the night, she often has two others with her, the deities called Hypnos (Sleep) and Thanatos (Death) who are children. Since she does this, some people call her the ‘Giver of Sleep or Death’. During her flight, she passes by Hemera (Day), her daughter, on her way to cover the world. They greet each other as Nyx leaves her home and Hemera enters it. They are never there at the same time because of their roles.

Nyx (Latin Nox) is the goddess of night. She is one of the protogenoi (first-born elemental gods), and was born from Khaos (Air). Alone, she spawned some very dark beings including the Moirai (the three Fates), Nemesis (justice and divine retribution), winged Hypnos (Sleep) and His brother Thanatos (Death), Moros (Doom), the Keres, Goddesses of violent death, Oizys (Misery), the Hesperides who guarded the golden apples, Deceit, Friendship, Old Age and Eris (Strife, sometimes said to be a daughter of Hera). Even though many believe Khaos to be her mother, the true creation of Nyx is unknown.
